What Went Right in 2020

As we approach the end of the year, as an exercise, I like to think back at everything that went right and find lessons in what I think went wrong. Well, 2020 definitely gave each of us some doozies this year but it’s easier to point out the hard or frustrating things. Instead, I’d like to challenge you to look at the positive things that came out of this year.

I’ll go first…

1. Andrew and I learned we enjoy co-working from home. We never had the chance to both work from home before so we’ve never known if it would work - if we would get along in such tight quarters! But we’ve always dreamed of working together in a future business and now we know we actually are able to work together. It’s helped me to realize maybe this is something we can work towards or incorporate in our future.

2. I started creating content. It has looong been in the back of my mind that I should start a blog. I actually did start one years ago but never followed through with creating content for it. But in 2020 I realized I needed to really get going. I knew I had specific knowledge about living overseas that would be helpful to others. I finally decided to put my thoughts about expat life out there and it feels good to know others will benefit from the lessons I’ve learned as an expat.

3. I began to heal my inner child. I won’t go into too much detail here as this is something very personal. But each of us has an inner child and mine needed some healing. I discovered this needed attention at the end of 2019 and have been working hard on it throughout 2020. If you’re interested in learning more about inner child work, check out this book.

4. I relaxed into life in Buenos Aires. All the experts say it takes time to adjust to living in a new culture. And you never know how long that adjustment period will take. Well, in early 2020 I finally adjusted into living in Buenos Aires. It took me almost two years! (I plan on writing more about this adjustment in the future) But I’m so thankful that I had at least had 1 full year of living in and loving life in Buenos Aires.

5. I feel more grateful for everything that I have. Living in Argentina during the global pandemic has highlighted for me how lucky I am to have the life that I have. I’ve seen first hand on the news every night how people have been affected by the virus and it’s really sad.

In the USA, we watch people sit in their cars in food lines to get a large box of foods to put in their auto-lifting trunks. Well, in Argentina, most people don’t have a car. They walk miles to a food line where they wait with an old tupperware container in hand.

When they get to the front of the line, whatever container they have is filled with a vegetable soup for them to take home to their family to share. And they’ll get a few bread rolls.

Actually, I feel grateful that I’ve lived in both Angola and Argentina to give me a more holistic perspective on my life.

These have been my favorite parts of 2020. Sure, there were some hard things too. Like when the pandemic hit and we didn’t know if it would be safer to stay in Argentina or brave flying home to Texas. Or when Andrew first started working from home and the fights we got in because we didn’t have enough “space”. And of course the hardest part of 2020 was learning our time in Buenos Aires was up.

However, the positives of 2020 have far outweighed the negatives and it was actually one of the best years of my life. But I’m still looking forward to 2021. I’m excited for the journey I’ve started this year and to see where it will go.

Alright, now it’s your turn! What went right for you in 2020? Tell me down in the comments so I can celebrate with you!
